Lanka’s batting has struck very good form over the last couple of games — though Mahela Jayawardene needs a big score soon – and the bowling has been second to none in wicket- taking efficiency in this tournament.

In fielding, I would believe they hold a distinct edge over India. India’s strength was considered to be its batting. But in the last two games, the bowling has been splendid and the fielding tigerish. Sehwag at the top and Raina at number 7 provide the flourish in batting which is matched by the virtuosity of Tendulkar, the solidity of Gambhir and Kohli, and the born- again brilliance of Yuvraj Singh.

Indeed Yuvraj’s rise to eminence as the cup’s premier all- rounder has played a significant role in India’s success, especially with his ability to pick up wickets and complete his quota of overs.

Kamran Akmal, Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq have been known to bail out the team in crucial games. Then there are the youngsters like Hafeez and Umar Akmal, not to mention Afridi and Razzaq who can put a good score on the board in the slog overs.


As for India, the men in blue will need to give much more than what they have so far, playing well above all their games up to now. They need to be level-headed and calm, not giving in to pressure while fielding or batting and using the support of the home crowd at Mohali to their advantage. On the way to the quarter final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, South Africans won five matches and lost one against England in a low-scoring match. In their first match of the biggest cricketing event, defeated West Indies by seven wickets.

In the next match, South Africa registered the biggest victory of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 against Netherlands. Africans won that match by 231 runs. They lost to England by six runs in the next match. In its fourth, fifth and sixth match in the Cricket World Cup 2011 against India, Ireland and Bangladesh, South Africa won by three wickets, 131 runs and 206 runs respectively.

South Africans batsman AB de Villiers, who scored 318 from four matches, will come back in the next do-or-die quarter final match against New Zealand.

South Africa have won all their three matches at Shere Bangla National Stadium including the one against Bangladesh last week. However, during the ICC Cricket World Cup at this venue, three matches were very low scoring.

The winner of the third quarter final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 will play against the winner between Sri Lanka and England at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on March 29.

The second quarter final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, defending champion Australia will take on host India at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Thursday, March 24.

Both countries had met in a Cricket World Cup encounter last time in the final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, played in Johannesburg on March 23, 2003, where Australia defeated India by 125 runs. Meanwhile, in the warm-up match prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, India defeated Australia by 38 runs.

On Indian soil both team have met 44 times and the record is again in favour of the Australians by 23-17 (NR- 4).

In World Cup matches, Australia have beaten India in seven of the nine encounters.

At the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, the two world champs played each other almost 25 years back. At this venue India has featured in 13 occasions and won five matches, while one game was cancelled.

On the way to the quarter finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, India beat Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands and West Indies by 87 runs, five wickets each and 80 runs respectively, whereas lost to South Africa by three wickets. However, one match against England ended in a tie.

Australian batsmen Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Michael Clarke, and Michael Hussey are in prime form. However, captain Ricky Ponting has not played any remarkable innings in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Their fast bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Shaun Tait can create some problems for Indian batsmen.

Yuvraj Singh is trying to find his best form, and looks to be getting there slowly. The left hander is one of the most gifted batsmen in the world of cricket and if he gets his touch back, he can be crucial in the middle of the innings for India. Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan have been impressive throughout the tour, in all formats of the game.

The bowling attack for South Africa seems to be doing quite well, and it is the batting that has let them down most recently. Morne Morkel has been using the high bounce to good effect, while Dale Steyn is in the form of his life. The number one ranked bowler in the world continues to bowl spectacular out-swingers at lethal pace up front, and has proven to be lethal in the final overs.

India should go into the 4^th game as favourites considering their form in the last two games, but, rest assured, South Africa would come angry and prepared.

After a poor summer so far, Watson’s unbeaten 161 would have boosted the morale no ends and now the England side will need to come up with something special to get back to level pegging.









One got the feeling that England were a tad complacent, especially while batting and their score of 294 could have easily been 325 had it not been for a barrage of wickets towards the end. Then again, the trio of Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shehzad and Chris Tremlett was inexperienced and went for runs – something that can be avoided if the side played James Anderson for this game.

One can expect some changes to take place in both the sides. For Australia, Michael Hussey has had a hamstring injury and will be out of the rest of the games. This will allow Shaun Marsh to come into the playing eleven, which could also mean that he will open the innings and Brad Haddin will be pushed down.

With Nathan Hauritz getting the nod ahead of Xavier Doherty in the World Cup squad, he should also get a chance to play most of the remaining games.

From England’s perspective, the injury to Graeme Swann puts him out of the match. He will be replaced by James Tredwell if the side decides to go in with an extra spinner. However, it will be interesting to see if Anderson is fit and can take the field – replacing one of the quick bowlers in the side. Paul Collingwood should continue to remain in the sidelines.

When South Africa toured India last year they spent the one-day series chopping and changing to give everyone a chance to show their skills in Indian conditions ahead of the World Cup. Having culled a few players over the course of the past 10 months, they'll now be looking to fine-tune those preparations and pick their best team, knowing they only have these five matches plus a couple of warm-ups before their campaign gets underway against the West indies in Delhi on February 24.


One man has dominated the build-up for the Proteas, and will be watched eagerly by a public who have rarely experienced such hype for a player they've never seen bowl - not since Paul Adams emerged in the mid-nineties has there been this much chit-chat about someone who so few of the population have seen in action. The expectations surrounding Imran Tahir's call-up are clearly directly proportionate to the dearth of promising spin bowlers in South Africa.

Another big performer on the domestic circuit has gained a call-up, with Faf du Plessis likely to make his debut at some point during the series. David Miller and Colin Ingram are also included in the squad, giving it a relatively fresh feel. It seems likely that everyone will get a game at some stage to prove that they deserve to be part of the final World Cup squad. Ryan McLaren and Albie Morkel will watch on hoping they can find a way back into the selectors' plans.

The hosts have their work cut out for them, because India boast a strong unit. Although they've been weakened by the withdrawal of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir due to injury, the replacements are solid young players desperate to prove that they should be part of the squad that will seek India's first World Cup in 28 years. With the tournament being played on home soil, the honour of inclusion would hopefully mean more than a fat IPL contract.

Those who enjoy Test cricket probably wish this series could be exchanged for another five-day encounter between two sides who entertained ceaslessly as they traded blows over the past month. After the three-match series ended 1-1 and left punters panting for more it's obviously a pity that a fourth or even fifth Test won't be played, but at least the five one-dayers we have lined up will have a real sense of purpose.
