The clinical Proteas, who came to India on the back of a gruelling test series against England, comprehensively beat the home side in the first test at Nagpur in less than four days. On the first day when South Africa were reduced to 6 for 2, it looked as though they were affected by the crisis that engulfed them leading up to the tour. But, a brilliant display of batting; first by the ever dependable veteran Jacques Kallis, and then by the wristy Hashim Amla, who notched up his maiden double ton, swung the momentum firmly in the visitor's favour. With a mammoth total on board, the South African bowlers took full advantage of a weakened Indian batting line-up that had both Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman missing due to injuries. The Indians were found wanting by Dale Styen's unrelenting line of attack at Nagpur. He bowled with venom, constantly clocking above the 140 kmph mark, troubling the batsmen with both conventional and reverse swing en route to a 10 wicket match haul, which proved as decisive as Amla's heroics with the bat.

The forced selection of Wriddhiman Saha as a specialist batsmen due to under picking batsmen in the match squad left the selectors with plenty of egg on their face. Though the selectors might argue that it was a cruel twist of fate - the twin injuries to Laxman and his replacement Rohit Sharma - that led to Saha's debut, the inclusion of Saha in the squad, ahead of Dinesh Karthik was questionable. Karthik hit back in the best way imaginable by scoring more than 300 runs against West Zone in the Duleep Trophy final.

Australian legend Ian Chappell believes that India cannot sustain their number one status in test cricket due to the lack of a "champion" bowler, MS Dhoni backed his bowlers by saying that they were good enough to bowl out any opposition. But after the first test debacle, he must be pondering how his bowlers can dismiss the Proteas once, forget twice. Apart from the first one hour on day one, when Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma made good use of the early bite in the pitch, never were the South African batsmen threatened by any of the Indian bowlers - neither spin nor pace. Zaheer, who has been the spearhead of the bowling attack for a very long time, needs to show more consistency for India to pressurize the Proteas. And the fact that Ishant is a bowler, who is short on confidence and devoid of ideas at present, is common knowledge.

After an impressive debut series against Australia Down Under, the Delhi lad has been consistently over bowled in competitions and has lacked both venom and consistency. What he needs is a good work out in the domestic circuit, to get back his rhythm and most importantly, his confidence. Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, who sat out of the first test with a thigh strain, has been recalled for the second. Given his good track record against the Proteas, he looks set to be given a chance in the Kolkata test at the expense of a hapless Ishant. Along with Sreesanth, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik and young middle-order batsman Suresh Raina have been included in the squad for the second test. The back-up seamers, Sudeep Tyagi and Abhimanyu Mithun, and reserve wicketkeeper, Saha, have been dropped from the first test squad. The chairman of selectors, Kris Srikanth has declared that Laxman is fit and that he will be taking part in the second test. Laxman's return will surely bolster the fragile looking Indian middle-order.

The opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will have to deliver the goods at the top of the order, which they so consistently have over the last year or so. Gambhir, who uncharacteristically failed twice in the first test, really holds the key for India, especially with Dravid missing from the team. The fielding, as always has let the team down at Nagpur and it really needs to improve if India are serious about being the number one team in the test arena.

Amidst all the problems surrounding the home team, the South Africans in contrast look quietly confident heading into the final test. Their batting looks formidable after having piled on over 550 runs in the first test. The only worry for them would be the fitness of their captain Graeme Smith, who sustained a finger injury while fielding at the Eden Gardens during a practice session in the build-up to the final test on Sunday. Though Smith failed with the bat in Nagpur, his captaincy was praised by one and all. In his absence, Johan Botha might be included in the team as captain and AB de Villiers could be bumped up to open the innings along with Ashwell Prince. JP Duminy, who burst onto the international scene with a brilliant 166 at Melbourne against Australia in his debut series back in 2008, hasn't been amongst the runs in recent times. He needs to contribute with the bat, to cement his place in the test team. If Kallis and Amla continue their good form, the Proteas are sure to put the Indian bowlers through another grinder.

TEAM LINE UP

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 M Vijay, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 S Badrinath, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8, Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Amit Mishra/Pragyan Ojha/Ishant Sharma, 11 Sreesanth.

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Paul Harris, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel

Even if a rank turner awaits the two teams at Eden Gardens, the Indians could fail to capitalize on their home advantage if they fail to win the toss. With Laxman back in the scheme of things, the Indian batting sure looks stronger but unless Harbhajan fires at Kolkata, it is really hard to see India hanging onto the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings.

If you took one look at Phillip Hughes’ short career, you would swear he’s the next big thing in Australian cricket. The 22-year-old burst onto the test scene with a hundred in each innings against South Africa in 2009. In fact Hughes was being touted as the next Matthew Hayden, but a run of low scores during the 2009 Ashes series saw him dropped in favour of the now highly successful Shane Watson. The New South Welshman averages 45 from eight tests, but is now seen as the ‘fill in’ opening batsman when either Watson or Simon Katich is injured. Hughes has been given another chance at the top level but needs to justify his selection with a big score this test because Katich recently declared he is a chance to play in the fifth test. A big score this test would not only benefit Hughes’ future aspirations at the top of the order, but also Australia’s Ashes chances.

the Aussies to get a win they're an 11/8 shot. Interestingly there hasn't been a draw at the MCG since 1997 so a positive result looks likely. If you disagree you can back the draw at 9/4.

Despite the defeat in Perth England still have confidence in their abilities to retain the Ashes and can take positives from the fact that the series is still very much alive. Last time they toured Down Under they were 3-0 down at this stage and the Series was over.

They also have a good record of bouncing back after poor performances in recent years. After losing the 3rd Test match against Pakistan last summer they won the 4th Test by an innings and 223 runs. In the Ashes in England back in 2009 they came back from poor performances in Cardiff and Leeds with resounding wins in their next matches at Lords and the Oval respectively.

Never has a pitch been so heavily scrutinised and critiqued as much as the one being prepared for the upcoming Boxing Day encounter. According to the plethora of English press who’ve descended on Australian soil, chief MCG curator Cameron Hodgkins has allegedly decided to prepare a livelier strip with a little extra grass than usual in a deliberate attempt to favour the Australian bowling attack after their performance in Perth. While Hodgkins has every right to prepare whatever pitch he wants, a specialist spin bowler is still a necessity when playing in Melbourne because the wicket tends to break up significantly on the fourth and fifth days. Also the weather forecast for the first couple of days is predicting cool temperatures and rain, meaning there is a strong chance of frustrating delays.

Australia have failed at the top of the order in the last few innings. Phillip Hughes didn't look in good form when returning to the team in Perth,England certainly have the more settled opening pair so the 8/11 for them to have the highest opening partnership looks great value.

South Africa v India at Centurion, 1st Test - day 1

LIVE CRICKET TV

Two comprehensive series wins against the Australia and New Zealand at home, a confident looking India will take on South Africa in the first of the three test matches at the SuperSport Park, Centurion from 16th·December. Though the series is being staged at a far from ideal time, considering the ICC Cricket World Cup is just around the corner, the battle between the two teams sitting atop the ICC Test Rankings is very much 'the' rivalry for cricketing supremacy.

http://p.imgci.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/100800/100890.jpg

The home side’s plan of dominating the series from the word go may be hampered as a few key players have injuries to deal with. Topping that list is the Proteas captain Graeme Smith who fractured the ring finger of his left hand in the first ODI against Pakistan in the recently concluded series in Abu Dhabi. The Proteas are also sweating over the fitness of their star batsman Hashim Amla who struck his left forearm while fielding at short leg in the second test against Pakistan. Amla, who has been in sublime form in both the test and 50-over format of the game, scored 264 runs in his last four test innings and will be a great asset on home conditions. Alviro Petersen, who made his test debut in February this year, has played extremely well to cement his place as a specialist batsman. The current opening partner to captain Smith, Petersen became only the third South African batsman, after Andrew Hudson and Jacobus Rudolph, to score a ton on debut.

A confident looking Indian side will look to conquer the land of rainbows and continue their brilliant run of form in the longer version of the game. The devastating Virender Sehwag will be vital for the side to unsettle the South African pacers from day one. His opening partner Gautam Gambhir is the perfect foil and has come into some good form with back-to-back hundreds against New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI series. With heavyweights like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman to follow, the MS Dhoni – led Indian side is the stronger side on paper. This series will also be an opportunity for Suresh Raina to master the ability to play the short pitched delivery, something that has been a glitch in his batting. The selectors have also included the likes of Wriddhiman Saha and Cheteshwar Pujara in the squad, the latter an option should Raina fail in the first test.

Zaheer Khan will continue to spearhead the bowling department with Ishant Sharma and S.Sreesanth playing as the other two pacers. The selectors have also added youngster Jaidev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav in the test squad. 19-year-old Unadkat was picked after his good bowling performances in the under-19 team, where he spearheaded the bowling attack. Umesh Yadav, another medium pacer, was picked after good consistent performances for Vidarbha in both Ranji and Duleep Trophy. His ability to bowl at 140 kmph with a fair bit of consistency triggered his selection for this tour. In the spin department, Harbhajan Singh would be raring to return to action and be amongst the wickets. Harbhajan, who loves to bowl on a pitch that has a bit of bounce, will look to utilize the conditions at Centurion to his advantage against the South African batsmen, who aren’t great fans of spin bowling.

Setting sights on another series win, the Dhoni-led Indian side will go into the first test on Thursday looking to dominate from day one.

TEAM LINE UP

India: Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Shantakumaran Sreesanth.

South Africa: Graeme Smith, Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher, Paul Harris, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

South Africa will go into the match with home advantage and the onus is on them to take the game to the Indians. Centurion is the closest India will get to home conditions on this tour, and should they wish to end their poor run in South Africa, a win here is a must as the series will only get a whole lot tougher. A 500+ first innings score is a must for India, and with a good seam attack.

the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. Australia have seemingly gone into a blind, pin-the-tale-on-the-left-arm-spinner style panic. England’s back up bowlers toiled away unsuccessfully in Melbourne, Kevin Pietersen was ticked off for speeding and James Anderson completed a 20,000 miles round trip to Manchester and back.

Along with all of this, the make-up of England’s touring party was altered as the group welcomed the players’ wives and children into the set up for the rest of the tour. It says much for the settled nature of this England side that the appearance of a few WAGS has made the news. Given the spin Australia is in, perhaps England’s biggest enemy lies within in the form of complacency and hubris.

The loss of Stuart Broad is a blow for England but Surrey seamer Chris Tremlett should slot into the side in his place as another tall bowler who find the Waca wicket to his liking. There are also questions hanging over Anderson following his mammoth journey to be present at the birth of his second daughter. Head coach Andy Flower admitted this week that this scenario was far from ideal, but some things are just more important. Besides, Anderson will enter the game on a natural high following such a momentous occasion in his life.

The Waca is a result wicket and it rarely rains here, so expect the series to be done and dusted by Monday or heading towards an epic finale. Given how poor Australia were in Adelaide it seems highly unlikely that a week and another round of random selections will be sufficient to change their performance levels. Ponting is under pressure, the bowlers are under pressure; the entire team is under pressure.
